Students have lots of options to chooose from today when trying to decide which college to attend. Our “Best Value OE Schools” ranking is one tool we have developed to help in this regard.

In 2020-2021, 285 people earned their degree in ocean engineering, making the major the 306th most popular in the United States. In 2019-2020, ocean engineering graduates who were awarded their degree in 2017-2019, earned an average of $61,550 and had an average of $24,820 in loans still to pay off.

For this year’s “Best Value OE Schools” ranking, we looked at 11 colleges that offer a degree in ocean engineering. This ranking identifies schools with high-quality ocean engineering programs that also have a lower cost than schools of similar quality.

Some of the factors we look at when determining these rankings are overall quality of the ocean engineering program at the school and the cost of the school after aid is awarded among other things. For more information, check out our ranking methodology.

FAU did well in our major quality rankings, too. It placed #6 on our “Best Ocean Engineering Schools” list. The yearly cost to attend Florida Atlantic University is $10,735 for OE students.

You’ll join some of the best and brightest minds around if you attend University of Florida. The school came in at #2 for the Best Value OE Schools. UF is a large public school situated in Gainesville, Florida. It awarded 16 ’s OE degrees in 2020-2021.

UF not only placed well in this ranking. It is also #2 on our “Best Ocean Engineering Schools” list. The estimated yearly cost for UF is $5,135 for OE students.

The low undergrad student loan default rate of 1.7% is a good sign that students have an easier time paying off their loans than they might at other schools. For comparison, the national default rate is 10.1%. Students who start out at the school are likely to stick around. The freshman retention rate is 97%.

University of New Hampshire - Main Campus ranked #6 on this year’s Best Value OE Schools list. UNH is located in Durham, New Hampshire and, has a fairly large student population. In 2020-2021, this school awarded 23 ’s OE degrees to qualified students.

UNH also took the #5 spot in our “Best Ocean Engineering Schools” ranking. The estimated yearly cost for UNH is $24,160 for oe students.

With a freshman retention rate of 86%, the school does an excellent job of retaining its undergraduate students. The undergrad student loan default rate at the school is 1.7%, which is quite low when compared to the national default rate of 10.1%.

As a testament to the quality of education offered at UH Manoa, the school also landed the #7 spot in our “Best Ocean Engineering Schools” ranking. The yearly cost to attend University of Hawaii at Manoa is $14,687 for oe students.

With a ranking of #9, Florida Institute of Technology did quite well on the 2023 Best Value OE Schools list. Melbourne, Florida is the setting for this medium-sized institution of higher learning. The private not-for-profit school handed out ’s OE degrees to 42 students in 2020-2021.

Stevens Institute of Technology landed the #10 spot on the 2023 Best Value OE Schools ranking. This medium-sized school is located in Hoboken, New Jersey, and it awarded 8 ’s OE degrees in 2020-2021.
