Veterans have lots of options to chooose from today when trying to decide which college to attend. Our “Most Veteran Friendly in the New England Region for History” ranking is part of that endeavor.
In 2020-2021, 32,731 people earned their degree in history, making the major the 30th most popular in the United States. In 2019-2020, history graduates who were awarded their degree in 2017-2019, earned an average of $30,467 and had an average of $23,587 in loans still to pay off.
Across the New England region, there were 3,039 history graduates with average earnings and debt of $33,757 and $23,624 respectively.
For this year’s “Most Veteran Friendly in the New England Region for History” ranking, we looked at 47 colleges that offer a degree in history. The schools that top this list are recognized because they have great history programs and a strong support system for veterans and active service members.
Some of the factors we look at when determining these rankings are overall quality of the history program at the school, veteran affordability, and veteran population. See our ranking methodology to learn more.

You’ll be in good company if you decide to attend Brown University. It ranked #1 on our 2023 Most Veteran Friendly in the New England Region for History list. Brown is a fairly large private not-for-profit school situated in Providence, Rhode Island. It awarded 91 ’s history degrees in 2020-2021.

Located in Northfield, Vermont, this small private not-for-profit school handed out 79 diplomas to qualified ’s history students in 2020-2021.

University of Vermont did quite well in the 2023 Most Veteran Friendly in the New England Region for History ranking, coming in at #23. Located in Burlington, Vermont, this fairly large public school awarded 52 degrees to qualified ’s history students in 2020-2021.
UVM also took the #[COLLEGE_QUALITY_RANK_ALL_LEVELS] spot in our “[COLLEGE_QUALITY_NAME_ALL_LEVELS]” ranking.According to our most recent data, University of Vermont supports 13,292 students, and 218 of those are GI Bill® students, of which 142 are Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients. The average Post-9/11 GI Bill® award for tuition and fees at the school was $10,767. During this same period, 19 students qualified for the Yellow Ribbon Program. Eligible students may be able to receive credit for their military training.

Harvard University landed the #24 spot on the 2023 Most Veteran Friendly in the New England Region for History ranking. Located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, this large private not-for-profit school awarded 178 degrees to qualified ’s history students in 2020-2021.

The average Post-9/11 GI Bill® award for tuition and fees at the school was $8,012. On top of their other funding sources, 1 students qualified for the Yellow Ribbon Program.
Since the school has a undergrad student-to-faculty ratio of 5 to 1, those pursuing a degree will have more opportunities to interact with their professors.
