General Engineering is the 79th most popular major in the country with 11,796 degrees awarded in 2020-2021. In 2019-2020, general engineering graduates who were awarded their degree in 2017-2019, earned an average of $68,873 and had an average of $20,557 in loans still to pay off.
Across the Southeast region, there were 2,586 general engineering graduates with average earnings and debt of $62,738 and $21,037 respectively.

The colleges and universities that top this list are recognized because their general engineering program is one of the largest majors offered at the school.

You’ll be in good company if you decide to attend McNeese State University. It ranked #1 on our 2023 Schools Highly Focused on Engineering Major in the Southeast Region list. Lake Charles, Louisiana is the setting for this medium-sized institution of higher learning. The public school handed out ’s engineering degrees to 70 students in 2020-2021.
You’ll join some of the best and brightest minds around if you attend Saint Augustine’s University. The school came in at #2 for the Schools Highly Focused on Engineering Major in the Southeast Region. SAU is a private not-for-profit institution located in Raleigh, North Carolina. The school has a small population, and it awarded 5 ’s degrees in 2020-2021.
You’ll join some of the best and brightest minds around if you attend Mercer University. The school came in at #3 for the Schools Highly Focused on Engineering Major in the Southeast Region. Located in Macon, Georgia, this medium-sized private not-for-profit school handed out 116 degrees to qualified ’s engineering students in 2020-2021.
The school has an impressive undergrad student loan default rate. It’s only 3.5%, which is much lower than the national rate of 10.1%. The school has an excellent freshman retention rate of 87%, which means students like the school well enough to return for a second year.
You’ll be in good company if you decide to attend Potomac State College of West Virginia University. It ranked #4 on our 2023 Schools Highly Focused on Engineering Major in the Southeast Region list. Keyser, West Virginia is the setting for this small institution of higher learning. The public school handed out ’s engineering degrees to 12 students in 2020-2021.
Out of the 135 schools in the Schools Highly Focused on Engineering Major in the Southeast Region that were part of this year’s ranking, University of North Carolina at Asheville landed the #5 spot on the list. UNCA is a public institution located in Asheville, North Carolina. The school has a small population, and it awarded 28 ’s degrees in 2020-2021.
Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College landed the #6 spot on the 2023 Schools Highly Focused on Engineering Major in the Southeast Region ranking. Located in Perkinston, Mississippi, this medium-sized public school awarded 122 diplomas to qualified ’s engineering students in 2020-2021.

Tidewater Community College landed the #12 spot on the 2023 Schools Highly Focused on Engineering Major in the Southeast Region ranking. University of Alabama at Birmingham landed the #15 spot on the 2023 Schools Highly Focused on Engineering Major in the Southeast Region ranking.
