In 2019-2020, 41,945 people earned their degree in general English literature, making the major the 22nd most popular in the United States. In 2017-2018, general English literature graduates who were awarded their degree in 2015-2017, earned an average of $27,525 and had an average of $23,628 in loans still to pay off.

Across the Middle Atlantic region, there were 7,263 general English literature graduates with average earnings and debt of $28,188 and $24,414 respectively. At the master’s degree level specifically, there were 584 general English literature graduates with average earnings and debt of $60,887 and $46,998 respectively.

This ranking identifies schools with high-quality general English literature programs that also have a lower cost than schools of similar quality.
