Mathematics is the 32nd most popular major in the country with 31,080 degrees awarded in 2019-2020. In 2017-2018, mathematics graduates who were awarded their degree in 2015-2017, earned an average of $44,066 and had an average of $21,378 in loans still to pay off.

Across the Southwest region, there were 3,085 mathematics graduates with average earnings and debt of $45,218 and $20,069 respectively. At the doctor’s degree level specifically, there were 118 mathematics graduates with average earnings and debt of $71,970 and $95,025 respectively.

For this year’s “Best Value Math Schools for a Doctorate in the Southwest Region” ranking, we looked at 12 colleges that offer a degree in mathematics. This ranking identifies schools with high-quality mathematics programs that also have a lower cost than schools of similar quality.

Out of the 12 schools in the Best Value Math Schools for a Doctorate in the Southwest Region that were part of this year’s ranking, Texas Tech University landed the #3 spot on the list.
