2022 Best Value Bachelor’s Degree Colleges for Mathematics in the Southwest Region
When it comes to choosing a college, students have a lot of options - but not all of them are good. Our “Best Value Math Schools for a Bachelor’s in the Southwest Region” ranking is part of that endeavor.
In 2019-2020, 31,080 people earned their degree in mathematics, making the major the 32nd most popular in the United States. In 2017-2018, mathematics graduates who were awarded their degree in 2015-2017, earned an average of $44,066 and had an average of $21,378 in loans still to pay off.
Across the Southwest region, there were 3,085 mathematics graduates with average earnings and debt of $45,218 and $20,069 respectively. At the bachelor’s degree level specifically, there were 2,160 mathematics graduates with average earnings and debt of $38,896 and $23,899 respectively.
This year’s “Best Value Math Schools for a Bachelor’s in the Southwest Region” ranking looked at 32 colleges that offer degrees in a bachelor’s in mathematics. This ranking identifies schools with high-quality mathematics programs that also have a lower cost than schools of similar quality.
When determining these rankings, we looked at things such as overall quality of the mathematics program at the school and the cost to attend the school once aid has been awarded. For more information, check out our ranking methodology.

The school came in at #1 for the Best Value Math Schools for a Bachelor’s in the Southwest Region. Located in Edinburg, Texas, this large public school awarded 43 degrees to qualified bachelors’s math students in 2019-2020.
UT Rio Grande Valley also took the #13 spot in our “Best Mathematics Bachelor’s Degree Schools in the Southwest Region” ranking. The yearly cost to attend The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley is $4,514 for Southwest Region Bachelor’s Degree Math students.
The student loan default rate at the school is 4.8%, which is quite low when compared to the national default rate of 10.1%.

Houston, Texas is the setting for this large institution of higher learning. The public school handed out bachelors’s math degrees to 111 students in 2019-2020.

UH Downtown is a public institution located in Houston, Texas. The school has a fairly large population, and it awarded 27 bachelors’s degrees in 2019-2020.
