At the bachelor’s degree level specifically, there were 183 outdoor education graduates with average earnings and debt of $38,303 and $24,501 respectively.
For this year’s “Best Value Outdoor Education Schools for a Bachelor’s” ranking, we looked at 10 colleges that offer a degree in outdoor education. This ranking identifies schools with high-quality outdoor education programs that also have a lower cost than schools of similar quality.
To come up with these rankings, we looked at factors such as the cost to attend the school after aid is awarded and overall quality of the outdoor education program at the school. Check out our ranking methodology for more information.

Top 10 Best Value Bachelor’s Degree Colleges for Outdoor Education
You’ll join some of the best and brightest minds around if you attend Black Hills State University. The school came in at #1 for the Best Value Outdoor Education Schools for a Bachelor’s. Black Hills State University is a small school located in Spearfish, South Dakota that handed out 11 bachelors’s outdoor education degrees in 2019-2020.
BHSU did well in our major quality rankings, too. It placed #5 on our “Best Outdoor Education Bachelor’s Degree Schools” list. It costs about $16,641 for bachelor’s degree outdoor education students per year to attend BHSU.
You’ll be in good company if you decide to attend SUNY Cortland. It ranked #2 on our 2022 Best Value Outdoor Education Schools for a Bachelor’s list. SUNY Cortland is located in Cortland, New York and, has a medium-sized student population. In 2019-2020, this school awarded 8 bachelors’s outdoor education degrees to qualified students.
SUNY Cortland not only placed well in this ranking. It is also #1 on our “Best Outdoor Education Bachelor’s Degree Schools” list. The yearly cost to attend SUNY Cortland is $18,705 for Bachelor’s Degree Outdoor Education students.
With a freshman retention rate of 85%, the school does an excellent job of retaining its students. The low student loan default rate of 4.5% is a good sign that students have an easier time paying off their loans than they might at other schools. For comparison, the national default rate is 10.1%.

Out of the 10 schools in the Best Value Outdoor Education Schools for a Bachelor’s that were part of this year’s ranking, Central Michigan University landed the #4 spot on the list. Mount Pleasant, Michigan is the setting for this fairly large institution of higher learning. The public school handed out bachelors’s outdoor education degrees to 41 students in 2019-2020.

Fort Lewis College landed the #7 spot on the 2022 Best Value Outdoor Education Schools for a Bachelor’s ranking. Durango, Colorado is the setting for this small institution of higher learning. The public school handed out bachelors’s outdoor education degrees to 21 students in 2019-2020.
FLC did well in our major quality rankings, too. It placed #7 on our “Best Outdoor Education Bachelor’s Degree Schools” list. It costs about $16,274 for bachelor’s degree outdoor education students per year to attend FLC.
Murray State University ranked #8 on this year’s Best Value Outdoor Education Schools for a Bachelor’s list. Located in Murray, Kentucky, this medium-sized public school awarded 1 degrees to qualified bachelors’s outdoor education students in 2019-2020.
