2022 Best Value Engineering Tech Schools for a Bachelor’s in the Great Lakes Region

In 2019-2020, 4,195 people earned their degree in general engineering technology, making the major the 155th most popular in the United States. In 2017-2018, general engineering technology graduates who were awarded their degree in 2015-2017, earned an average of $49,903 and had an average of $20,609 in loans still to pay off.
Across the Great Lakes region, there were 628 general engineering technology graduates with average earnings and debt of $52,610 and $21,112 respectively. At the bachelor’s degree level specifically, there were 362 general engineering technology graduates with average earnings and debt of $39,075 and $25,381 respectively.
For this year’s “Best Value Engineering Tech Schools for a Bachelor’s in the Great Lakes Region” ranking, we looked at 12 colleges that offer a degree in general engineering technology. Not only do the schools that top this list have excellent general engineering technology programs, but they also cost less that schools of similar quality.

The school came in at #1 for the Best Value Engineering Tech Schools for a Bachelor’s in the Great Lakes Region. UW - Stout is a medium-sized public school situated in Menomonie, Wisconsin. It awarded 58 bachelors’s engineering tech degrees in 2019-2020.
As a testament to the quality of education offered at UW - Stout, the school also landed the #1 spot in our “Best General Engineering Technology Bachelor’s Degree Schools in the Great Lakes Region” ranking. The low student loan default rate of 3.8% is a good sign that students have an easier time paying off their loans than they might at other schools. For comparison, the national default rate is 10.1%.

The school came in at #2 for the Best Value Engineering Tech Schools for a Bachelor’s in the Great Lakes Region. NIU is a fairly large school located in Dekalb, Illinois that handed out 101 bachelors’s engineering tech degrees in 2019-2020.
