In 2019-2020, 11,925 people earned their degree in general engineering, making the major the 78th most popular in the United States. In 2017-2018, general engineering graduates who were awarded their degree in 2015-2017, earned an average of $66,152 and had an average of $20,077 in loans still to pay off.
At the master’s degree level specifically, there were 2,826 general engineering graduates with average earnings and debt of $56,398 and $43,194 respectively.
For this year’s “Best Value Engineering Schools for a Master’s For Those Making $0-$30k” ranking, we looked at 90 colleges that offer a degree in general engineering. The schools that top this list are recognized because they have great general engineering programs and cost less that schools of similar quality.

Located in Hanover, New Hampshire, this medium-sized private not-for-profit school handed out 165 degrees to qualified masters’s engineering students in 2019-2020.

You’ll be in good company if you decide to attend Brown University. It ranked #2 on our 2022 Best Value Engineering Schools for a Master’s For Those Making $0-$30k list. Brown is a medium-sized school located in Providence, Rhode Island that handed out 56 masters’s engineering degrees in 2019-2020.

Boston, Massachusetts is the setting for this large institution of higher learning. The private not-for-profit school handed out masters’s engineering degrees to 265 students in 2019-2020.
