Our “Best Value General Music Schools for a Doctorate” ranking is part of that endeavor.

General Music is the 68th most popular major in the country with 11,573 degrees awarded in 2019-2020.

At the doctor’s degree level specifically, there were 594 general music graduates with average earnings and debt of $72,680 and $116,043 respectively.

For this year’s “Best Value General Music Schools for a Doctorate” ranking, we looked at 57 colleges that offer a degree in general music. This ranking identifies schools with high-quality general music programs that also have a lower cost than schools of similar quality.

Some of the factors we look at when determining these rankings are overall quality of the general music program at the school and the cost of the school after aid is awarded among other things. For more information, check out our ranking methodology.
