In 2019-2020, 41,945 people earned their degree in general English literature, making the major the 22nd most popular in the United States. In 2017-2018, general English literature graduates who were awarded their degree in 2015-2017, earned an average of $27,525 and had an average of $23,628 in loans still to pay off.

Across the Southwest region, there were 3,932 general English literature graduates with average earnings and debt of $30,144 and $22,726 respectively. At the bachelor’s degree level specifically, there were 3,019 general English literature graduates with average earnings and debt of $38,896 and $23,899 respectively.

For this year’s “Best Value English Schools for a Bachelor’s in the Southwest Region” ranking, we looked at 51 colleges that offer a degree in general English literature. This ranking identifies schools with high-quality general English literature programs that also have a lower cost than schools of similar quality.

When determining these rankings, we looked at things such as overall quality of the general English literature program at the school and the cost to attend the school once aid has been awarded. Check out our ranking methodology for more information.
