In 2019-2020, 41,945 people earned their degree in general English literature, making the major the 22nd most popular in the United States. In 2017-2018, general English literature graduates who were awarded their degree in 2015-2017, earned an average of $27,525 and had an average of $23,628 in loans still to pay off.

At the doctor’s degree level specifically, there were 1,107 general English literature graduates with average earnings and debt of $72,680 and $116,043 respectively.

For this year’s “Best Value English Schools for a Doctorate” ranking, we looked at 120 colleges that offer a degree in general English literature. The schools that top this list are recognized because they have great general English literature programs and cost less that schools of similar quality.

When determining these rankings, we looked at things such as overall quality of the general English literature program at the school and the cost to attend the school once aid has been awarded. Check out our ranking methodology for more information.
