General English Literature is the 22nd most popular major in the country with 41,945 degrees awarded in 2019-2020. In 2017-2018, general English literature graduates who were awarded their degree in 2015-2017, earned an average of $27,525 and had an average of $23,628 in loans still to pay off.

Across the New England region, there were 3,750 general English literature graduates with average earnings and debt of $30,629 and $24,544 respectively. At the doctor’s degree level specifically, there were 74 general English literature graduates with average earnings and debt of $73,889 and $109,372 respectively.

This year’s “Best Value English Schools for a Doctorate in the New England Region” ranking looked at 11 colleges that offer degrees in a bachelor’s in general English literature. Not only do the schools that top this list have excellent general English literature programs, but they also cost less that schools of similar quality.
