2022 Best Value IE Schools for a Doctorate in the Great Lakes Region
When it comes to choosing a college, students have a lot of options - but not all of them are good. College Factual has developed its “Best Value IE Schools for a Doctorate in the Great Lakes Region” ranking as one item you can use to help make this decision.
Industrial Engineering is the 86th most popular major in the country with 9,448 degrees awarded in 2019-2020. In 2017-2018, industrial engineering graduates who were awarded their degree in 2015-2017, earned an average of $64,716 and had an average of $22,994 in loans still to pay off.
Across the Great Lakes region, there were 1,969 industrial engineering graduates with average earnings and debt of $66,753 and $24,537 respectively. At the doctor’s degree level specifically, there were 89 industrial engineering graduates with average earnings and debt of $74,428 and $121,375 respectively.
This year’s “Best Value IE Schools for a Doctorate in the Great Lakes Region” ranking looked at 8 colleges that offer degrees in a bachelor’s in industrial engineering. Not only do the schools that top this list have excellent industrial engineering programs, but they also cost less that schools of similar quality.
When determining these rankings, we looked at things such as overall quality of the industrial engineering program at the school and the cost to attend the school once aid has been awarded. Check out our ranking methodology for more information.

University of Michigan - Ann Arbor landed the #7 spot on the 2022 Best Value IE Schools for a Doctorate in the Great Lakes Region ranking. This large school is located in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and it awarded 23 doctorate’s IE degrees in 2019-2020.
U-M not only placed well in this ranking. It is also #2 on our “Best Industrial Engineering Doctor’s Degree Schools in the Great Lakes Region” list. Average graduate tuition and fees at U-M are $49,548, but some majors have different tuition rates.
With a ranking of #8, Northwestern University did quite well on the 2022 Best Value IE Schools for a Doctorate in the Great Lakes Region list. Located in Evanston, Illinois, this large private not-for-profit school awarded 10 degrees to qualified doctorate’s IE students in 2019-2020.
