With all of the options students have for higher education today, it can be tough to choose which direction to take. Our “Best Value Engineering Schools for a Doctorate in the Great Lakes Region” ranking is part of that endeavor.

In 2019-2020, 200,458 engineering students received their degree, making the major the 6th most popular in the country. In 2017-2018, engineering graduates who were awarded their degree in 2015-2017, earned an average of $64,888 and had an average of $23,564 in loans still to pay off.

Across the Great Lakes region, there were 32,788 engineering graduates with average earnings and debt of $66,596 and $24,858 respectively. At the doctor’s degree level specifically, there were 2,026 engineering graduates with average earnings and debt of $74,428 and $121,375 respectively.

For this year’s “Best Value Engineering Schools for a Doctorate in the Great Lakes Region” ranking, we looked at 25 colleges that offer a degree in engineering. The schools that top this list are recognized because they have great engineering programs and cost less that schools of similar quality.

Some of the factors we look at when determining these rankings are overall quality of the engineering program at the school and the cost of the school after aid is awarded among other things. For more information, check out our ranking methodology.

Out of the 25 schools in the Best Value Engineering Schools for a Doctorate in the Great Lakes Region that were part of this year’s ranking, University of Wisconsin - Madison landed the #1 spot on the list. Madison, Wisconsin is the setting for this large institution of higher learning. The public school handed out doctorate’s engineering degrees to 120 students in 2019-2020.
