English Language & Literature is the 16th most popular major in the country with 56,860 degrees awarded in 2019-2020. In 2017-2018, English language and literature graduates who were awarded their degree in 2015-2017, earned an average of $27,873 and had an average of $24,681 in loans still to pay off.

At the master’s degree level specifically, there were 7,906 English language and literature graduates with average earnings and debt of $56,398 and $43,194 respectively.

This year’s “Best Value English Language & Literature Schools for a Master’s For Those Getting Aid” ranking looked at 422 colleges that offer degrees in a bachelor’s in English language and literature. The schools that top this list are recognized because they have great English language and literature programs and cost less that schools of similar quality.

When determining these rankings, we looked at things such as overall quality of the English language and literature program at the school and the cost to attend the school once aid has been awarded. Check out our ranking methodology for more information.
