In 2019-2020, 32,905 people earned their degree in history, making the major the 30th most popular in the United States. In 2017-2018, history graduates who were awarded their degree in 2015-2017, earned an average of $29,593 and had an average of $23,490 in loans still to pay off.

At the associate degree level specifically, there were 2,502 history graduates with average earnings and debt of $33,082 and $17,678 respectively.

For this year’s “Best Value History Schools for an Associate” ranking, we looked at 6 colleges that offer a degree in history. This ranking identifies schools with high-quality history programs that also have a lower cost than schools of similar quality.

You’ll be in good company if you decide to attend American Public University System. It ranked #1 on our 2022 Best Value History Schools for an Associate list. American Military University is a private for-profit institution located in Charles Town, West Virginia. The school has a large population, and it awarded 39 associates’s degrees in 2019-2020.

American Military University also took the #1 spot in our “Best History Associate Degree Schools” ranking. The yearly cost to attend American Public University System is $10,222 for Associate Degree History students.

#2 in overall quality

Out of the 6 schools in the Best Value History Schools for an Associate that were part of this year’s ranking, Brigham Young University - Idaho landed the #2 spot on the list. BYU - I is a large private not-for-profit school situated in Rexburg, Idaho. It awarded 61 associates’s history degrees in 2019-2020.

BYU - I also made our “Best History Associate Degree Schools” list, coming in at #2. It costs about $7,167 for Associate Degree History students per year to attend Brigham Young University - Idaho.

The school has an impressive student loan default rate. It’s only 3.2%, which is much lower than the national rate of 10.1%.

You’ll join some of the best and brightest minds around if you attend Utah Valley University. The school came in at #3 for the Best Value History Schools for an Associate. This large school is located in Orem, Utah, and it awarded 21 associates’s history degrees in 2019-2020.

In addition to being on our associate degree history students list, UVU has also earned the #3 rank in our “Best History Associate Degree Schools” ranking. It costs about $9,159 for associate degree history students per year to attend Utah Valley University.

You’ll join some of the best and brightest minds around if you attend SUNY Empire State College. The school came in at #4 for the Best Value History Schools for an Associate. Saratoga Springs, New York is the setting for this fairly large institution of higher learning. The public school handed out associates’s history degrees to 4 students in 2019-2020.
