Our “Best Value History Schools for a Doctorate in the Southeast Region” ranking is one tool we have developed to help in this regard.

History is the 30th most popular major in the country with 32,905 degrees awarded in 2019-2020. In 2017-2018, history graduates who were awarded their degree in 2015-2017, earned an average of $29,593 and had an average of $23,490 in loans still to pay off.

Across the Southeast region, there were 7,627 history graduates with average earnings and debt of $29,119 and $23,749 respectively. At the doctor’s degree level specifically, there were 166 history graduates with average earnings and debt of $71,978 and $116,300 respectively.

This year’s “Best Value History Schools for a Doctorate in the Southeast Region” ranking analyzed 27 colleges that offered a degree in history. This ranking identifies schools with high-quality history programs that also have a lower cost than schools of similar quality.

Some of the factors we look at when determining these rankings are overall quality of the history program at the school and the cost of the school after aid is awarded among other things. Check out our ranking methodology for more information.
