In 2019-2020, 64,869 people earned their degree in health and physical education, making the major the 11th most popular in the United States. In 2017-2018, health and physical education graduates who were awarded their degree in 2015-2017, earned an average of $29,872 and had an average of $24,778 in loans still to pay off.
Across the Southeast region, there were 16,699 health and physical education graduates with average earnings and debt of $29,232 and $25,452 respectively. At the master’s degree level specifically, there were 2,640 health and physical education graduates with average earnings and debt of $53,950 and $43,286 respectively.
This year’s “Best Value Phys Ed Schools for a Master’s in the Southeast Region” ranking looked at 80 colleges that offer degrees in a bachelor’s in health and physical education. The schools that top this list are recognized because they have great health and physical education programs and cost less that schools of similar quality.
When determining these rankings, we looked at things such as overall quality of the health and physical education program at the school and the cost to attend the school once aid has been awarded. Check out our ranking methodology for more information.

Out of the 80 schools in the Best Value Phys Ed Schools for a Master’s in the Southeast Region that were part of this year’s ranking, Liberty University landed the #2 spot on the list. Located in Lynchburg, Virginia, this large private not-for-profit school handed out 176 diplomas to qualified masters’s phys ed students in 2019-2020.
Liberty University also took the #17 spot in our “Best Health & Physical Education Master’s Degree Schools in the Southeast Region” ranking. Although you might pay more or less depending on your area of study, average graduate tuition and fees at Liberty University are $8,349.
You’ll be in good company if you decide to attend Cumberland University. It ranked #3 on our 2022 Best Value Phys Ed Schools for a Master’s in the Southeast Region list. CU is a small school located in Lebanon, Tennessee that handed out 16 masters’s phys ed degrees in 2019-2020.

You’ll join some of the best and brightest minds around if you attend Citadel Military College of South Carolina. The school came in at #4 for the Best Value Phys Ed Schools for a Master’s in the Southeast Region. The Citadel is a public institution located in Charleston, South Carolina. The school has a small population, and it awarded 19 masters’s degrees in 2019-2020.
