Diversity in College is Important
It’s quite possible you’ve heard that diversity is important to the total university experience, but what do we mean when we discuss diversity?
The root word of diversity is from the Latin, "diversus" which means "various". We use it today to describe a mixture of peoples, traditions, cultures and ideas.
How does this translate to the university experience?
Students who say that diversity in university is important to them are looking for institutions to offer a variety of curricular and non-curricular opportunities to learn from and learn with people of different ethnicities, races, ages, abilities, sexual identities, religions, and classes.
In order to achieve the most benefit from diversity on campus, seek out institutions that are not only promoting diversity by actively recruiting students and hiring faculty from minority groups, but are also promoting an environment where there is confident interaction between different groups.
