How is Diversity Important to You?
It is likely you have heard that diversity is critical to the college experience, but what do we mean when we discuss the topic of diversity?
Largely speaking, diversity is the word we use to describe a mixture of people and ideas, and the traditions, belief cultures and systems that come with them.
With all of this in mind, what does 'diversity in college' mean?
When most students seek diversity on campus, what they are actually looking for are opportunities to express themselves and find community with others who believe the same way, as well as opportunities to learn from those from different cultures and backgrounds.
Diversity can be encouraged by the college in multiple ways. For one, institutions should be making an effort to hire a diverse faculty to engage students. But the school should also be doing the best they can to promote meaningful interactions between people from differing backgrounds. This prevents faculty and students from becoming isolated and helps bring about positive connections.
