Will you go to LTC for free thanks to the G.I. Bill®? Coverage is not unlimited and varies school to school, so the fine print is worth checking.
Below is the gap between the Post-9/11 tuition benefit and the cost at LTC. Living-expense and book benefits are addressed in their own sections below.
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Veteran tuition & fees | $4,649 |
| Guaranteed Post-9/11 tuition benefit | $4,649 |
| Tuition out of pocket | $0 |
At public institutions the Post-9/11 GI Bill® pays in-state tuition and fees in full, meaning most eligible veterans pay no tuition at LTC.
Federal data does not indicate that LTC currently participates in the Yellow Ribbon Program. If you need benefits beyond the Post-9/11 cap, ask the schools veteran services office whether any programs participate.
DoD Tuition Assistance pays up to $250 per credit hour for active-duty students; here is how the per-credit charge at LTC compares.
| Residency | Per-credit charge | Below $250 cap? |
|---|---|---|
| In-state | $12 | |
| Out-of-state | $12 |
The Post-9/11 GI Bill® also covers housing through a Monthly Housing Allowance (MHA). Here is how that benefit compares to the estimated cost of living at LTC.
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Estimated living expenses (room & board, academic year) | $9,614 |
| Post-9/11 monthly housing allowance (MHA) | $1,431/mo |
| Housing benefit (academic year, ~8 months) | $11,448 |
| Estimated surplus in your pocket | $1,834 |
At this school the academic-year housing benefit exceeds typical living costs, so most full-time students come out ahead. The MHA is based on the school’s ZIP code and is paid at the full-time rate for resident students.
Eligible veterans receive up to $1,000 a year for books and supplies; LTC estimates these costs at about $2,061, leaving about $1,061 out of pocket.
Beyond the coverage math above, this is how much veteran education-benefit money actually flows to LTC.
Roughly 44 veterans received Post-9/11 GI Bill® tuition payments of $114,191.
| Benefit | Recipients | Total disbursed | Average / recipient |
|---|---|---|---|
| GI Bill® (all students) | 38 | $95,139 | $2,504 |
| GI Bill® — undergraduate | 38 | $95,139 | — |
| DoD Tuition Assistance (all) | 1 | $1,408 | $1,408 |
| DoD TA — undergraduate | 1 | $1,408 | — |
GI Bill® benefits follow the veteran; DoD Tuition Assistance is an active-duty benefit paid while serving.
