Will you go to SPU for free thanks to the G.I. Bill®? Coverage is not unlimited and varies school to school, so the fine print is worth checking.
Below is the gap between the Post-9/11 tuition benefit and the cost at SPU. See the living-expense and book sections below for those benefits.
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Veteran tuition & fees | $38,814 |
| Guaranteed Post-9/11 tuition benefit | $20,235 |
| Tuition out of pocket | $18,579 |
The Post-9/11 GI Bill® caps the annual tuition benefit (about $20,235), so the tuition above that is a gap veterans must cover through Yellow Ribbon, savings, or other aid at SPU.
Seattle Pacific University participates in the Yellow Ribbon Program, which can cover tuition and fees beyond the Post-9/11 GI Bill® cap through matching funds from the school and the VA. In the most recent year, about 34 students received Yellow Ribbon awards at this school.
Available Yellow Ribbon seats and maximum contributions differ by program and degree level — check with the veteran services office for current limits.
Active-duty service members using DoD Tuition Assistance are capped at $250 per credit hour. The chart below shows whether the per-credit charge at SPU falls under that cap.
| Residency | Per-credit charge | Below $250 cap? |
|---|---|---|
| In-state | $27 | |
| Out-of-state | $27 |
Beyond tuition, the Post-9/11 GI Bill® pays a Monthly Housing Allowance (MHA) while you are enrolled. The table compares the housing benefit to estimated living expenses at SPU.
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Estimated living expenses (room & board, academic year) | $15,498 |
| Post-9/11 monthly housing allowance (MHA) | $3,174/mo |
| Housing benefit (academic year, ~8 months) | $25,392 |
| Estimated surplus in your pocket | $9,894 |
At this school the academic-year housing benefit exceeds typical living costs, so most full-time students come out ahead. The MHA is based on the school’s ZIP code and is paid at the full-time rate for resident students.
Eligible veterans receive up to $1,000 a year for books and supplies; SPU estimates these costs at about $768, so the stipend covers them in full.
These figures show the GI Bill® and DoD Tuition Assistance dollars veterans and service members actually used at SPU.
Approximately 62 students drew Post-9/11 GI Bill® tuition benefits totaling $1,136,786.
| Benefit | Recipients | Total disbursed | Average / recipient |
|---|---|---|---|
| GI Bill® (all students) | 62 | $1,527,869 | $24,643 |
| GI Bill® — undergraduate | 45 | $1,285,603 | — |
| GI Bill® — graduate | 17 | $242,266 | — |
These are federal education benefits — the Post-9/11 GI Bill® for veterans and DoD Tuition Assistance for active-duty members.
