Wondering what the G.I. Bill® actually covers at UHSP? Coverage is not unlimited and varies school to school, so the fine print is worth checking.
The table below compares the guaranteed Post-9/11 tuition benefit to the cost of attending UHSP. Living-expense and book benefits are addressed in their own sections below.
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Veteran tuition & fees | $31,920 |
| Guaranteed Post-9/11 tuition benefit | $20,235 |
| Tuition out of pocket | $11,685 |
The Post-9/11 GI Bill® limits the annual tuition benefit to roughly $20,235, so tuition beyond that is out of pocket (or covered by Yellow Ribbon) at UHSP.
Through the Yellow Ribbon Program, University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy in St. Louis and the VA share the cost of tuition above the Post-9/11 cap. In the most recent year, about 7 students received Yellow Ribbon awards at this school.
Available Yellow Ribbon seats and maximum contributions differ by program and degree level — check with the veteran services office for current limits.
For active-duty students, Tuition Assistance covers up to $250 per credit hour — the indicators below show whether UHSP is below that cap.
| Residency | Per-credit charge | Below $250 cap? |
|---|---|---|
| In-state | $600 | |
| Out-of-state | $600 |
Beyond tuition, the Post-9/11 GI Bill® pays a Monthly Housing Allowance (MHA) while you are enrolled. Here is how that benefit compares to the estimated cost of living at UHSP.
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Estimated living expenses (room & board, academic year) | $12,375 |
| Post-9/11 monthly housing allowance (MHA) | $2,376/mo |
| Housing benefit (academic year, ~8 months) | $19,008 |
| Estimated surplus in your pocket | $6,633 |
The benefit generally more than covers off-campus living costs here. The MHA is based on the school’s ZIP code and is paid at the full-time rate for resident students.
The Post-9/11 GI Bill® pays a books-and-supplies stipend of up to $1,000 per year. Estimated book and supply costs at UHSP run about $1,200, leaving about $200 out of pocket.
These figures show the GI Bill® and DoD Tuition Assistance dollars veterans and service members actually used at UHSP.
Roughly 12 veterans received Post-9/11 GI Bill® tuition payments of $312,380.
| Benefit | Recipients | Total disbursed | Average / recipient |
|---|---|---|---|
| GI Bill® (all students) | 9 | $229,847 | $25,539 |
| GI Bill® — undergraduate | 6 | $191,520 | — |
| GI Bill® — graduate | 3 | $38,327 | — |
GI Bill® benefits follow the veteran; DoD Tuition Assistance is an active-duty benefit paid while serving.
