Will you go to SBTS for free thanks to the G.I. Bill®? GI Bill® benefits are limited and differ by school, so the specifics matter.
Below is the gap between the Post-9/11 tuition benefit and the cost at SBTS. Housing and book benefits are covered separately below.
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Veteran tuition & fees | $13,086 |
| Guaranteed Post-9/11 tuition benefit | $13,086 |
| Tuition out of pocket | $0 |
Because tuition is at or below the annual Post-9/11 benefit, the GI Bill® covers it in full at SBTS.
Federal data does not indicate that SBTS currently participates in the Yellow Ribbon Program. If you need benefits beyond the Post-9/11 cap, ask the schools veteran services office whether any programs participate.
DoD Tuition Assistance pays up to $250 per credit hour for active-duty students; here is how the per-credit charge at SBTS compares.
| Residency | Per-credit charge | Below $250 cap? |
|---|---|---|
| In-state | $675 | |
| Out-of-state | $675 |
On top of tuition, the Post-9/11 GI Bill® provides a Monthly Housing Allowance (MHA) for the months you are in school. Here is how that benefit compares to the estimated cost of living at SBTS.
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Estimated living expenses (room & board, academic year) | $2,460 |
| Post-9/11 monthly housing allowance (MHA) | $2,073/mo |
| Housing benefit (academic year, ~8 months) | $16,584 |
| Estimated surplus in your pocket | $14,124 |
For most full-time students the housing allowance covers the cost of living off campus, with money left over. The MHA is based on the school’s ZIP code and is paid at the full-time rate for resident students.
The Post-9/11 GI Bill® pays a books-and-supplies stipend of up to $1,000 per year. Estimated book and supply costs at SBTS run about $1,700, leaving about $700 out of pocket.
These figures show the GI Bill® and DoD Tuition Assistance dollars veterans and service members actually used at SBTS.
In the latest reporting year, about 24 veterans received Post-9/11 GI Bill® tuition payments of $140,464.
| Benefit | Recipients | Total disbursed | Average / recipient |
|---|---|---|---|
| GI Bill® (all students) | 31 | $216,505 | $6,984 |
| GI Bill® — undergraduate | 3 | $6,268 | — |
| GI Bill® — graduate | 28 | $210,237 | — |
GI Bill® benefits follow the veteran; DoD Tuition Assistance is an active-duty benefit paid while serving.
