Will you go to UND for free thanks to the G.I. Bill®? GI Bill® benefits are limited and differ by school, so the specifics matter.
Here is how the Post-9/11 GI Bill® tuition benefit stacks up against the published cost of attending UND. See the living-expense and book sections below for those benefits.
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Veteran tuition & fees | $10,951 |
| Guaranteed Post-9/11 tuition benefit | $10,951 |
| Tuition out of pocket | $0 |
The Post-9/11 GI Bill® tuition benefit is enough to cover the full tuition and fees at UND.
University of North Dakota participates in the Yellow Ribbon Program, which can cover tuition and fees beyond the Post-9/11 GI Bill® cap through matching funds from the school and the VA.
Available Yellow Ribbon seats and maximum contributions differ by program and degree level — check with the veteran services office for current limits.
DoD Tuition Assistance pays up to $250 per credit hour for active-duty students; here is how the per-credit charge at UND compares.
| Residency | Per-credit charge | Below $250 cap? |
|---|---|---|
| In-state | $71 | |
| Out-of-state | $71 |
Beyond tuition, the Post-9/11 GI Bill® pays a Monthly Housing Allowance (MHA) while you are enrolled. Here is how that benefit compares to the estimated cost of living at UND.
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Estimated living expenses (room & board, academic year) | $11,046 |
| Post-9/11 monthly housing allowance (MHA) | $1,710/mo |
| Housing benefit (academic year, ~8 months) | $13,680 |
| Estimated surplus in your pocket | $2,634 |
For most full-time students the housing allowance covers the cost of living off campus, with money left over. Your actual MHA depends on your rate of pursuit and the school’s location.
Eligible veterans receive up to $1,000 a year for books and supplies; UND estimates these costs at about $800, so the stipend covers them in full.
Beyond the coverage math above, this is how much veteran education-benefit money actually flows to UND.
Roughly 565 veterans received Post-9/11 GI Bill® tuition payments of $5,480,517.
| Benefit | Recipients | Total disbursed | Average / recipient |
|---|---|---|---|
| GI Bill® (all students) | 484 | $4,487,707 | $9,272 |
| GI Bill® — undergraduate | 405 | $3,846,837 | — |
| GI Bill® — graduate | 79 | $640,870 | — |
| DoD Tuition Assistance (all) | 288 | $774,342 | $2,689 |
| DoD TA — undergraduate | 246 | $692,623 | — |
| DoD TA — graduate | 42 | $81,719 | — |
GI Bill® dollars are paid on the veterans behalf, while DoD Tuition Assistance supports active-duty service members.
