How much of the cost at WIU will the G.I. Bill® cover? GI Bill® benefits are limited and differ by school, so the specifics matter.
The table below compares the guaranteed Post-9/11 tuition benefit to the cost of attending WIU. Living-expense and book benefits are addressed in their own sections below.
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Veteran tuition & fees | $14,952 |
| Guaranteed Post-9/11 tuition benefit | $14,952 |
| Tuition out of pocket | $0 |
Public-college veterans generally have their entire in-state tuition paid by the Post-9/11 GI Bill® at WIU.
Federal data does not indicate that WIU currently participates in the Yellow Ribbon Program. If you need benefits beyond the Post-9/11 cap, ask the schools veteran services office whether any programs participate.
DoD Tuition Assistance pays up to $250 per credit hour for active-duty students; here is how the per-credit charge at WIU compares.
| Residency | Per-credit charge | Below $250 cap? |
|---|---|---|
| In-state | $99 | |
| Out-of-state | $99 |
The Post-9/11 GI Bill® also covers housing through a Monthly Housing Allowance (MHA). Below, the academic-year housing benefit is set against the estimated living costs at WIU.
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Estimated living expenses (room & board, academic year) | $10,920 |
| Post-9/11 monthly housing allowance (MHA) | $1,773/mo |
| Housing benefit (academic year, ~8 months) | $14,184 |
| Estimated surplus in your pocket | $3,264 |
For most full-time students the housing allowance covers the cost of living off campus, with money left over. Your actual MHA depends on your rate of pursuit and the school’s location.
Eligible veterans receive up to $1,000 a year for books and supplies; WIU estimates these costs at about $1,200, leaving about $200 out of pocket.
These figures show the GI Bill® and DoD Tuition Assistance dollars veterans and service members actually used at WIU.
Approximately 25 veterans received Post-9/11 GI Bill® tuition payments of $152,819.
| Benefit | Recipients | Total disbursed | Average / recipient |
|---|---|---|---|
| GI Bill® (all students) | 106 | $629,503 | $5,939 |
