General Agriculture is the 148th most popular major in the country with 3,332 degrees awarded in 2019-2020. In 2017-2018, general agriculture graduates who were awarded their degree in 2015-2017, earned an average of $33,257 and had an average of $20,441 in loans still to pay off.
At the associate degree level specifically, there were 856 general agriculture graduates with average earnings and debt of $33,082 and $17,678 respectively.
For this year’s “Best Value Agriculture Schools for an Associate” ranking, we looked at 15 colleges that offer a degree in general agriculture. Not only do the schools that top this list have excellent general agriculture programs, but they also cost less that schools of similar quality.

South Dakota State University is a public institution located in Brookings, South Dakota. The school has a fairly large population, and it awarded 20 associates’s degrees in 2019-2020.
South Dakota State not only placed well in this ranking. It is also #2 on our “Best General Agriculture Associate Degree Schools” list. It costs about $19,252 for Associate Degree Agriculture students per year to attend South Dakota State University.
The school has an impressive student loan default rate. It’s only 3.8%, which is much lower than the national rate of 10.1%.

North Carolina State University did quite well in the 2022 Best Value Agriculture Schools for an Associate ranking, coming in at #9. North Carolina State University is a public institution located in Raleigh, North Carolina. The school has a large population, and it awarded 23 associates’s degrees in 2019-2020.
As a testament to the quality of education offered at NC State, the school also landed the #3 spot in our “Best General Agriculture Associate Degree Schools” ranking. The estimated yearly cost for North Carolina State University is $16,458 for Associate Degree Agriculture students.
Students who start out at the school are likely to stick around. The freshman retention rate is 94%.
