With all of the options students have for higher education today, it can be tough to choose which direction to take. College Factual was founded, in part, to help students make the decision as to what would be the best school for them. Our “Best Value Biotech Schools” ranking is part of that endeavor.

Biotechnology is the 174th most popular major in the country with 3,911 degrees awarded in 2020-2021. In 2019-2020, biotechnology graduates who were awarded their degree in 2017-2019, earned an average of $52,907 and had an average of $20,555 in loans still to pay off.

For this year’s “Best Value Biotech Schools” ranking, we looked at 110 colleges that offer a degree in biotechnology. The schools that top this list are recognized because they have great biotechnology programs and cost less that schools of similar quality.

When determining these rankings, we looked at things such as overall quality of the biotechnology program at the school and the cost to attend the school once aid has been awarded. See our ranking methodology to learn more.

Out of the 110 schools in the Best Value Biotech Schools that were part of this year’s ranking, Brigham Young University - Provo landed the #1 spot on the list. Provo, Utah is the setting for this large institution of higher learning. The private not-for-profit school handed out ’s biotech degrees to 35 students in 2020-2021.

BYU also took the #14 spot in our “Best Biotechnology Schools” ranking. It costs about $13,474 for Biotech students per year to attend BYU.

You’ll be in good company if you decide to attend University of Maryland Global Campus. It ranked #2 on our 2023 Best Value Biotech Schools list. UMGC is a large public school situated in Adelphi, Maryland. It awarded 136 ’s biotech degrees in 2020-2021.

As a testament to the quality of education offered at UMGC, the school also landed the #16 spot in our “Best Biotechnology Schools” ranking. The yearly cost to attend University of Maryland Global Campus is $15,395 for Biotech students.
