2022 Best Value EE Schools for a Doctorate in the New England Region
It’s not easy to decide which college to attend when there so many options available for students. Electrical Engineering is the 31st most popular major in the country with 30,670 degrees awarded in 2019-2020. In 2017-2018, electrical engineering graduates who were awarded their degree in 2015-2017, earned an average of $70,098 and had an average of $23,581 in loans still to pay off.
Across the New England region, there were 1,754 electrical engineering graduates with average earnings and debt of $80,947 and $25,227 respectively. At the doctor’s degree level specifically, there were 139 electrical engineering graduates with average earnings and debt of $73,889 and $109,372 respectively.
For this year’s “Best Value EE Schools for a Doctorate in the New England Region” ranking, we looked at 10 colleges that offer a degree in electrical engineering. Not only do the schools that top this list have excellent electrical engineering programs, but they also cost less that schools of similar quality.
To come up with these rankings, we looked at factors such as the cost to attend the school after aid is awarded and overall quality of the electrical engineering program at the school. For more information, check out our ranking methodology.

Out of the 10 schools in the Best Value EE Schools for a Doctorate in the New England Region that were part of this year’s ranking, Northeastern University landed the #1 spot on the list. Northeastern University is located in Boston, Massachusetts and, has a large student population. In 2019-2020, this school awarded 20 doctorate’s EE degrees to qualified students.
Northeastern also made our “Best Electrical Engineering Doctor’s Degree Schools in the New England Region” list, coming in at #3. Average graduate tuition and fees at Northeastern are $25,558, but some majors have different tuition rates.
Out of the 10 schools in the Best Value EE Schools for a Doctorate in the New England Region that were part of this year’s ranking, Worcester Polytechnic Institute landed the #2 spot on the list. Worcester, Massachusetts is the setting for this medium-sized institution of higher learning. The private not-for-profit school handed out doctorate’s EE degrees to 5 students in 2019-2020.
WPI did well in our major quality rankings, too. It placed #2 on our “Best Electrical Engineering Doctor’s Degree Schools in the New England Region” list. Average graduate tuition and fees at Worcester Polytechnic Institute are $29,040, but you may pay more or less depending on your major.

Out of the 10 schools in the Best Value EE Schools for a Doctorate in the New England Region that were part of this year’s ranking, University of Massachusetts - Lowell landed the #3 spot on the list. University of Massachusetts - Lowell is a fairly large school located in Lowell, Massachusetts that handed out 5 doctorate’s EE degrees in 2019-2020.
UMass Lowell also took the #10 spot in our “Best Electrical Engineering Doctor’s Degree Schools in the New England Region” ranking. Average graduate tuition and fees at University of Massachusetts - Lowell are $26,990, but you may pay more or less depending on your major.
You’ll join some of the best and brightest minds around if you attend University of Rhode Island. The school came in at #4 for the Best Value EE Schools for a Doctorate in the New England Region. University of Rhode Island is a fairly large public school situated in Kingston, Rhode Island. It awarded 4 doctorate’s EE degrees in 2019-2020.

Out of the 10 schools in the Best Value EE Schools for a Doctorate in the New England Region that were part of this year’s ranking, University of Maine landed the #5 spot on the list. Orono, Maine is the setting for this fairly large institution of higher learning. The public school handed out doctorate’s EE degrees to 1 students in 2019-2020.
As a testament to the quality of education offered at UMaine, the school also landed the #11 spot in our “Best Electrical Engineering Doctor’s Degree Schools in the New England Region” ranking. This large school is located in Amherst, Massachusetts, and it awarded 19 doctorate’s EE degrees in 2019-2020.

University of Connecticut came in at #7 in this year’s edition of the Best Value EE Schools for a Doctorate in the New England Region ranking. UCONN is a public institution located in Storrs, Connecticut. The school has a large population, and it awarded 11 doctorate’s degrees in 2019-2020.
UCONN also made our “Best Electrical Engineering Doctor’s Degree Schools in the New England Region” list, coming in at #5. Average graduate tuition and fees at UCONN are $41,576, but some majors have different tuition rates.

With a ranking of #8, Tufts University did quite well on the 2022 Best Value EE Schools for a Doctorate in the New England Region list. Tufts University is a private not-for-profit institution located in Medford, Massachusetts. The school has a fairly large population, and it awarded 3 doctorate’s degrees in 2019-2020.

With a ranking of #9, Massachusetts Institute of Technology did quite well on the 2022 Best Value EE Schools for a Doctorate in the New England Region list. This fairly large school is located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and it awarded 44 doctorate’s EE degrees in 2019-2020.
MIT did well in our major quality rankings, too. It placed #1 on our “Best Electrical Engineering Doctor’s Degree Schools in the New England Region” list. Average graduate tuition and fees at MIT are $56,719, but you may pay more or less depending on your major.

Boston University ranked #10 on this year’s Best Value EE Schools for a Doctorate in the New England Region list. Boston University is located in Boston, Massachusetts and, has a large student population. In 2019-2020, this school awarded 16 doctorate’s EE degrees to qualified students.
