When it comes to choosing a college, students have a lot of options - but not all of them are good. College Factual has developed its “Best Value OE Schools for a Bachelor’s” ranking as one item you can use to help make this decision.

In 2019-2020, 302 people earned their degree in ocean engineering, making the major the 297th most popular in the United States. In 2017-2018, ocean engineering graduates who were awarded their degree in 2015-2017, earned an average of $61,200 and had an average of $26,965 in loans still to pay off.

At the bachelor’s degree level specifically, there were 193 ocean engineering graduates with average earnings and debt of $38,303 and $24,501 respectively.

This year’s “Best Value OE Schools for a Bachelor’s” ranking looked at 5 colleges that offer degrees in a bachelor’s in ocean engineering. This ranking identifies schools with high-quality ocean engineering programs that also have a lower cost than schools of similar quality.

When determining these rankings, we looked at things such as overall quality of the ocean engineering program at the school and the cost to attend the school once aid has been awarded. Check out our ranking methodology for more information.

Texas A&M University - College Station is a public institution located in College Station, Texas. The school has a large population, and it awarded 52 bachelors’s degrees in 2019-2020.

Kingston, Rhode Island

You’ll be in good company if you decide to attend University of Rhode Island. It ranked #3 on our 2022 Best Value OE Schools for a Bachelor’s list. URI is a fairly large public school situated in Kingston, Rhode Island. It awarded 30 bachelors’s OE degrees in 2019-2020.

URI also took the #4 spot in our “Best Ocean Engineering Bachelor’s Degree Schools” ranking. It costs about $20,607 for Bachelor’s Degree OE students per year to attend URI.

The school has an impressive student loan default rate. It’s only 4.2%, which is much lower than the national rate of 10.1%. With a freshman retention rate of 85%, the school does an excellent job of retaining its students.

Out of the 5 schools in the Best Value OE Schools for a Bachelor’s that were part of this year’s ranking, University of New Hampshire - Main Campus landed the #4 spot on the list. Located in Durham, New Hampshire, this fairly large public school handed out 7 diplomas to qualified bachelors’s OE students in 2019-2020.

As a testament to the quality of education offered at UNH, the school also landed the #3 spot in our “Best Ocean Engineering Bachelor’s Degree Schools” ranking. The yearly cost to attend UNH is $24,067 for bachelor’s degree oe students.

Students who start out at the school are likely to stick around. The freshman retention rate is 86%. The low student loan default rate of 2.0% is a good sign that students have an easier time paying off their loans than they might at other schools. For comparison, the national default rate is 10.1%.
