It’s not easy to decide which college to attend when there so many options available for veterans. College Factual has developed its “Most Veteran Friendly in the Southeast Region for Consumer Science” ranking as one item you can use to help make this decision.
General Family & Consumer Sciences is the 168th most popular major in the country with 2,906 degrees awarded in 2020-2021. In 2019-2020, general family and consumer sciences graduates who were awarded their degree in 2017-2019, earned an average of $30,445 and had an average of $27,314 in loans still to pay off.
Across the Southeast region, there were 859 general family and consumer sciences graduates with average earnings and debt of $27,635 and $31,435 respectively.
For this year’s “Most Veteran Friendly in the Southeast Region for Consumer Science” ranking, we looked at 20 colleges that offer a degree in general family and consumer sciences. Not only do the schools that top this list have excellent general family and consumer sciences programs, but they also offer a lot of support to veterans and active service members.
Some of the factors we look at when determining these rankings are overall quality of the general family and consumer sciences program at the school, veteran affordability, and veteran population. For more information, check out our ranking methodology.

Top 20 Best General Family & Consumer Sciences Colleges for Veterans in the Southeast Region
Out of the 20 schools in the Most Veteran Friendly in the Southeast Region for Consumer Science that were part of this year’s ranking, The University of Alabama landed the #1 spot on the list. The University of Alabama is a public institution located in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The school has a large population, and it awarded 221 ’s degrees in 2020-2021.
UA did well in our major quality rankings, too. It placed #[COLLEGE_QUALITY_RANK_ALL_LEVELS] on our “[COLLEGE_QUALITY_NAME_ALL_LEVELS]” list.Our most recent data shows that 2,081 of the 37,840 students enrolled at UA were GI Bill® students, of which 1,128 were Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients. The average tuition and fees award for the Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients was $7,975. To help with additional expenses, 357 students received scholarships through the Yellow Ribbon Program. Eligible students may be able to receive credit for their military training.

You’ll be in good company if you decide to attend University of Kentucky. It ranked #2 on our 2023 Most Veteran Friendly in the Southeast Region for Consumer Science list. Lexington, Kentucky is the setting for this large institution of higher learning. The public school handed out ’s consumer science degrees to 40 students in 2020-2021.
UK not only placed well in this ranking. North Carolina A & T State University is located in Greensboro, North Carolina and, has a fairly large student population. In 2020-2021, this school awarded 26 ’s consumer science degrees to qualified students.
