In 2020-2021, 2,724 people earned their degree in American Sign Language, making the major the 199th most popular in the United States. In 2019-2020, American Sign Language graduates who were awarded their degree in 2017-2019, earned an average of $32,250 and had an average of $24,208 in loans still to pay off.

Across the Middle Atlantic region, there were 357 American Sign Language graduates with average earnings and debt of $38,437 and $26,875 respectively.

For this year’s “Best Value ASL Schools in the Middle Atlantic Region” ranking, we looked at 4 colleges that offer a degree in American Sign Language. Not only do the schools that top this list have excellent American Sign Language programs, but they also cost less that schools of similar quality.

Gallaudet University is a small school located in Washington, District of Columbia that handed out 77 ’s ASL degrees in 2020-2021.

Gallaudet did well in our major quality rankings, too. It placed #1 on our “Best American Sign Language Schools in the Middle Atlantic Region” list. The estimated yearly cost for Gallaudet University is $16,833 for Middle Atlantic Region ASL students.

Out of the 4 schools in the Best Value ASL Schools in the Middle Atlantic Region that were part of this year’s ranking, Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania landed the #2 spot on the list. Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania is a public institution located in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania. The school has a medium-sized population, and it awarded 31 ’s degrees in 2020-2021.

RIT is a private not-for-profit institution located in Rochester, New York. The school has a fairly large population, and it awarded 38 ’s degrees in 2020-2021.

As a testament to the quality of education offered at RIT, the school also landed the #2 spot in our “Best American Sign Language Schools in the Middle Atlantic Region” ranking. The yearly cost to attend Rochester Institute of Technology is $34,822 for Middle Atlantic Region ASL students.

With a freshman retention rate of 86%, the school does an excellent job of retaining its undergraduate students. The undergrad student loan default rate at the school is 2.9%, which is quite low when compared to the national default rate of 10.1%.
