American Sign Language is the 199th most popular major in the country with 2,724 degrees awarded in 2020-2021. In 2019-2020, American Sign Language graduates who were awarded their degree in 2017-2019, earned an average of $32,250 and had an average of $24,208 in loans still to pay off.
Across the Great Lakes region, there were 432 American Sign Language graduates with average earnings and debt of $29,108 and $29,244 respectively.
This year’s “Most Veteran Friendly in the Great Lakes Region for ASL” ranking analyzed 4 colleges that offered a degree in American Sign Language. The schools that top this list are recognized because they have great American Sign Language programs and a strong support system for veterans and active service members.

Top 4 Best American Sign Language Colleges for Veterans in the Great Lakes Region
You’ll be in good company if you decide to attend Kent State University at Kent. It ranked #1 on our 2023 Most Veteran Friendly in the Great Lakes Region for ASL list. Located in Kent, Ohio, this large public school awarded 18 degrees to qualified ’s ASL students in 2020-2021.
Kent State not only placed well in this ranking. It is also #[COLLEGE_QUALITY_RANK_ALL_LEVELS] on our “[COLLEGE_QUALITY_NAME_ALL_LEVELS]” list.Among the 26,822 students enrolled at Kent State, 778 are GI Bill® students, according to our most recent data. Out of that number, 374 were Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients. The average Post-9/11 GI Bill® award for tuition and fees at the school was $7,199. You’ll join some of the best and brightest minds around if you attend Columbia College Chicago. The school came in at #2 for the Most Veteran Friendly in the Great Lakes Region for ASL. Columbia is located in Chicago, Illinois and, has a medium-sized student population. In 2020-2021, this school awarded 21 ’s ASL degrees to qualified students.
Columbia also made our “[COLLEGE_QUALITY_NAME_ALL_LEVELS]” list, coming in at #[COLLEGE_QUALITY_RANK_ALL_LEVELS].Among the 6,769 students enrolled at Columbia College Chicago, 140 are GI Bill® students, according to our most recent data. Out of that number, 98 were Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients. The average tuition and fees award for the Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients was $17,151. To help with additional expenses, 25 students received scholarships through the Yellow Ribbon Program. Students may be able to receive credit for their military training, depending on their background.

Out of the 4 schools in the Most Veteran Friendly in the Great Lakes Region for ASL that were part of this year’s ranking, Madonna University landed the #3 spot on the list. Livonia, Michigan is the setting for this small institution of higher learning. The private not-for-profit school handed out ’s ASL degrees to 16 students in 2020-2021.
In addition to being on our great lakes region vets studying asl list, Madonna has also earned the #[COLLEGE_QUALITY_RANK_ALL_LEVELS] rank in our “[COLLEGE_QUALITY_NAME_ALL_LEVELS]” ranking.Our most recent data shows that 66 of the 2,792 students enrolled at Madonna were GI Bill® students, of which 31 were Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients. The average Post-9/11 GI Bill® award for tuition and fees at the school was $13,452. On top of their other funding sources, 8 students received funds through the Yellow Ribbon Program. Eligible students may be able to receive credit for their military training.
