We analyzed 9 grad schools across Kansas to determine which have the best doctorate degree programs. Our ranking methodology focuses on different objective factors to make this determination of the best grad schools. In the next few paragraphs, we'll talk a little about what we use in our analysis and why.
To determine the overall quality of a graduate school, one factor we look at is the average early-career salary of those receiving a doctorate degree from the school. That is, everyone wants their doctorate degree to be worth something, and salaries are one measure of determining that.
Graduate students may also take on a lot of debt while working on their doctorate so we factor that into our rankings as well. The average amount taken out in student loans for graduates at a particular school may be crippling for those who earn less than average wages after graduation.
We also analyze a number of other factors in addition to average post-graduation earnings and average student debt when coming up with our yearly Best Doctorate Degree Schools ranking. On a broad level, other factors that go into our rankings include such things as the demand of the school, the student body caliber, if the school has online options, and the educational resources provided by the school.

Our analysis found University of Kansas to be the best grad school for doctorate degrees in Kansas in this year’s ranking. KU is a large public school situated in Lawrence, Kansas. It awarded 916 doctorate degrees in 2020-2021.
Graduates with a doctorate degree from KU make an average of $73,258 per year during the early years of their career.
The excellent doctorate degree programs at Kansas State University helped the school earn the #2 place on this year’s ranking of the best schools in Kansas. Located in Manhattan, Kansas, the fairly large public school handed out 339 doctorate degrees in 2020-2021.
Upon graduation, doctorate degree recipients go on to jobs making an average salary of $72,427 during the early years of their career.
A rank of #3 on our Best Doctorate Degrees in Kansas list means Baker University is a great place for students working on their degree. Located in Baldwin City, Kansas, the small private not-for-profit school handed out 26 doctorate degrees in 2020-2021.

The excellent doctorate degree programs at Washburn University helped the school earn the #4 place on this year’s ranking of the best schools in Kansas. Washburn University is a medium-sized public school situated in Topeka, Kansas. It awarded 120 doctorate degrees in 2020-2021.
The average salary of a graduate with a doctorate degree from Washburn University is $48,996 during the early years of their career.
You’ll join some of the best and brightest minds around if you attend Fort Hays State University. The school came in at #5 in Kansas on this year’s best doctorate degree schools ranking. Located in Hays, Kansas, the fairly large public school handed out 17 doctorate degrees in 2020-2021.
With a ranking of #6, Wichita State University did quite well on the 2024 Best Doctorate Degree Schools in Kansas list. Wichita, Kansas is the setting for this fairly large institution of higher learning. The public school handed out doctorate degrees to 94 students in 2020-2021.
During the early years of their career, doctorate degree graduates from WSU make an average of $85,542 a year.
Pittsburg State University ranked #7 on this year’s Best Doctorate Degree Schools in Kansas list. Pittsburg State University is a medium-sized public school located in Pittsburg, Kansas that handed out 18 doctorate degrees in 2020-2021.
University of Saint Mary came in at #8 in this year’s edition of the Best Doctorate Degree Schools in Kansas ranking. Leavenworth, Kansas is the setting for this small institution of higher learning. The private not-for-profit school handed out doctorate degrees to 41 students in 2020-2021.
