Our “Best Value Publishing Schools” ranking is one tool we have developed to help in this regard.
Publishing is the 299th most popular major in the country with 336 degrees awarded in 2020-2021. In 2019-2020, publishing graduates who were awarded their degree in 2017-2019, earned an average of $43,066 and had an average of $0 in loans still to pay off.
This year’s “Best Value Publishing Schools” ranking analyzed 10 colleges that offered a degree in publishing. This ranking identifies schools with high-quality publishing programs that also have a lower cost than schools of similar quality.
When determining these rankings, we looked at things such as overall quality of the publishing program at the school and the cost to attend the school once aid has been awarded. Check out our ranking methodology for more information.

Top 10 Best Value Colleges for Publishing
Out of the 10 schools in the Best Value Publishing Schools that were part of this year’s ranking, Brigham Young University - Provo landed the #1 spot on the list. Provo, Utah is the setting for this large institution of higher learning. The private not-for-profit school handed out ’s publishing degrees to 43 students in 2020-2021.
BYU also made our “Best Publishing Schools” list, coming in at #2. The estimated yearly cost for Brigham Young University - Provo is $13,474 for publishing students.
Students who start out at the school are likely to stick around. The freshman retention rate is 92%. The low undergrad student loan default rate of 1.3% is a good sign that students have an easier time paying off their loans than they might at other schools. You’ll join some of the best and brightest minds around if you attend George Washington University. The school came in at #2 for the Best Value Publishing Schools. Located in Washington, District of Columbia, this large private not-for-profit school awarded 59 degrees to qualified ’s publishing students in 2020-2021.
As a testament to the quality of education offered at GWU, the school also landed the #1 spot in our “Best Publishing Schools” ranking. The yearly cost to attend George Washington University is $32,563 for publishing students.
The school has an excellent freshman retention rate of 88%, which means students like the school well enough to return for a second year. Belmont University landed the #8 spot on the 2023 Best Value Publishing Schools ranking. Belmont is a medium-sized private not-for-profit school situated in Nashville, Tennessee. It awarded 13 ’s publishing degrees in 2020-2021.
