In 2020-2021, 363 people earned their degree in education of the deaf, making the major the 790th most popular in the United States.
For this year’s “Best Value Deaf Education Schools” ranking, we looked at 22 colleges that offer a degree in education of the deaf. The schools that top this list are recognized because they have great education of the deaf programs and cost less that schools of similar quality.
When determining these rankings, we looked at things such as overall quality of the education of the deaf program at the school and the cost to attend the school once aid has been awarded. For more information, check out our ranking methodology.

Top 22 Best Value Colleges for Education of the Deaf
Out of the 22 schools in the Best Value Deaf Education Schools that were part of this year’s ranking, Hunter College landed the #1 spot on the list. Located in New York, New York, this large public school handed out 7 diplomas to qualified ’s deaf education students in 2020-2021.
Hunter also made our “Best Education of the Deaf Schools” list, coming in at #2. The estimated yearly cost for Hunter College is $2,158 for Deaf Education students.
The undergrad student loan default rate at the school is 3.1%, which is quite low when compared to the national default rate of 10.1%.

You’ll join some of the best and brightest minds around if you attend McDaniel College. The school came in at #2 for the Best Value Deaf Education Schools. Westminster, Maryland is the setting for this small institution of higher learning. The private not-for-profit school handed out ’s deaf education degrees to 11 students in 2020-2021.
As a testament to the quality of education offered at McDaniel, the school also landed the #9 spot in our “Best Education of the Deaf Schools” ranking. The estimated yearly cost for McDaniel College is $22,385 for Deaf Education students.
The undergrad student loan default rate at the school is 2.5%, which is quite low when compared to the national default rate of 10.1%.

Out of the 22 schools in the Best Value Deaf Education Schools that were part of this year’s ranking, Lamar University landed the #3 spot on the list. This fairly large school is located in Beaumont, Texas, and it awarded 11 ’s deaf education degrees in 2020-2021.
As a testament to the quality of education offered at Lamar University, the school also landed the #11 spot in our “Best Education of the Deaf Schools” ranking. It costs about $11,739 for Deaf Education students per year to attend Lamar University.
The low undergrad student loan default rate of 4.3% is a good sign that students have an easier time paying off their loans than they might at other schools. For comparison, the national default rate is 10.1%.

University of North Carolina at Greensboro did quite well in the 2023 Best Value Deaf Education Schools ranking, coming in at #6. Greensboro, North Carolina is the setting for this fairly large institution of higher learning. The public school handed out ’s deaf education degrees to 28 students in 2020-2021.

Fontbonne University did well in our major quality rankings, too. It placed #14 on our “Best Education of the Deaf Schools” list. It costs about $15,359 for Deaf Education students per year to attend Fontbonne University.

The College of New Jersey came in at #10 in this year’s edition of the Best Value Deaf Education Schools ranking. The College of New Jersey is a medium-sized school located in Ewing, New Jersey that handed out 7 ’s deaf education degrees in 2020-2021.

CLU not only placed well in this ranking. It is also #12 on our “Best Education of the Deaf Schools” list. It costs about $27,410 for Deaf Education students per year to attend CLU.
