In 2020-2021, 36,792 people earned their degree in special education, making the major the 29th most popular in the United States. In 2019-2020, special education graduates who were awarded their degree in 2017-2019, earned an average of $45,679 and had an average of $24,977 in loans still to pay off.
Across the Southeast region, there were 5,866 special education graduates with average earnings and debt of $42,190 and $24,022 respectively. At the bachelor’s degree level specifically, there were 1,802 special education graduates with average earnings and debt of $37,400 and $27,180 respectively.
This year’s “Most Well Attended Special Ed Major in the Southeast Region for a Bachelor’s” ranking looked at 155 colleges that offer degrees in a bachelor’s in special education. To top this list, a school must have a successful special education program that graduates more students in the field than other colleges that offer the same major.
