It’s not easy to decide which college to attend when there so many options available for students. College Factual has developed its “Most Well Attended ASL Major in the Great Lakes Region for a Bachelor’s” ranking as one item you can use to help make this decision.
In 2020-2021, 2,724 people earned their degree in American Sign Language, making the major the 199th most popular in the United States. In 2019-2020, American Sign Language graduates who were awarded their degree in 2017-2019, earned an average of $32,250 and had an average of $24,208 in loans still to pay off.
Across the Great Lakes region, there were 432 American Sign Language graduates with average earnings and debt of $29,108 and $29,244 respectively. At the bachelor’s degree level specifically, there were 101 American Sign Language graduates with average earnings and debt of $40,343 and $26,790 respectively.
This year’s “Most Well Attended ASL Major in the Great Lakes Region for a Bachelor’s” ranking looked at 10 colleges that offer degrees in a bachelor’s in American Sign Language. This ranking identifies schools that graduate the most students in American Sign Language.

Located in Goshen, Indiana, this small private not-for-profit school handed out 10 degrees to qualified bachelors’s ASL students in 2020-2021.
The school has an impressive undergrad student loan default rate. It’s only 4.3%, which is much lower than the national rate of 10.1%. With a undergrad student-to-faculty ratio of 10 to 1, it’s easy to see that the school is committed to helping their undergraduates succeed.
Indiana University - Purdue University - Indianapolis did quite well in the 2023 Most Well Attended ASL Major in the Great Lakes Region for a Bachelor’s ranking, coming in at #6. Indianapolis, Indiana is the setting for this large institution of higher learning. The public school handed out bachelors’s ASL degrees to 8 students in 2020-2021.
The low undergrad student loan default rate of 4.2% is a good sign that students have an easier time paying off their loans than they might at other schools. For comparison, the national default rate is 10.1%.
