Why Diversity is Valuable
Diversity can be somewhat of a buzzword with university admissions officers and students. What does it mean to you?
The root word of diversity is from the Latin, "diversus" which means "various". Today we use it to describe a mixture of people, traditions, ideas and cultures.
With all of this in mind, what does 'diversity in college' mean?
Students who say that diversity in university is important to them are looking for institutions to provide a variety of curricular and non-curricular opportunities to learn from and learn with people of different ethnicities, races, ages, abilities, sexual identities, classes, and religions.
Diversity can be promoted by the university in several ways. First, institutions should be making an effort to hire a varied faculty to nurture students. But the school should also be doing the best they can to promote substantial interactions between people from different backgrounds. This prevents faculty and students from self-segregating and promotes positive connections.
