Field of Study Overview

As an Area, Ethnic, Cultural, or Gender Studies major, you will pick one specific field and become an expert on that topic. Popular concentrations include African Studies, U.S. Studies, Latin American Studies, East Asian Studies, Near & Middle Eastern Studies, African-American Studies and Women Studies. Students will frequently study the power and oppression that is associated with their topic, explore societal norms and look for connections with other areas of the studies. Many curriculums will include the study of identity, cross-cultural literacy, and cultural diversity.

As a graduate from a studies program you will be able to step into essentially almost any career of your choosing. A major in area studies will have learned critical thinking skills and the ability to communicate clearly and effectively. You will be prepared to work in journalism, television, community organizing, a variety of governmental positions, law, education, policy, counseling, social work, or cultural, gender, and ethnic studies and a variety of different careers.
