It’s not easy to decide which college to attend when there so many options available for students. American Sign Language is the 199th most popular major in the country with 2,724 degrees awarded in 2020-2021. In 2019-2020, American Sign Language graduates who were awarded their degree in 2017-2019, earned an average of $32,250 and had an average of $24,208 in loans still to pay off.
Across the Great Lakes region, there were 432 American Sign Language graduates with average earnings and debt of $29,108 and $29,244 respectively.
This year’s “Most Well Attended ASL Major in the Great Lakes Region” ranking analyzed 31 colleges that offered a degree in American Sign Language. The schools that top this list are recognized because they have one of the most popular American Sign Language programs in the United States.

Out of the 31 schools in the Most Well Attended ASL Major in the Great Lakes Region that were part of this year’s ranking, Oakland Community College landed the #1 spot on the list. Goshen College ranked #12 on this year’s Most Well Attended ASL Major in the Great Lakes Region list. Goshen is located in Goshen, Indiana and, has a small student population. In 2020-2021, this school awarded 10 ’s ASL degrees to qualified students.
The low undergrad student loan default rate of 4.3% is a good sign that students have an easier time paying off their loans than they might at other schools.
