Our “Most Veteran Friendly in Oregon for Physics” ranking is one tool we have developed to help in this regard.
In 2020-2021, 13,674 people earned their degree in physics, making the major the 68th most popular in the United States. In 2019-2020, physics graduates who were awarded their degree in 2017-2019, earned an average of $42,960 and had an average of $22,756 in loans still to pay off.
Across Oregon, there were 187 physics graduates with average earnings and debt of $43,009 and $23,963 respectively.
For this year’s “Most Veteran Friendly in Oregon for Physics” ranking, we looked at 4 colleges that offer a degree in physics. This ranking identifies schools with high-quality physics programs as well as strong veteran support.

Top 4 Best Physics Colleges for Veterans in Oregon
You’ll be in good company if you decide to attend Portland State University. It ranked #1 on our 2023 Most Veteran Friendly in Oregon for Physics list. Located in Portland, Oregon, this large public school handed out 27 degrees to qualified ’s physics students in 2020-2021.
As a testament to the quality of education offered at Portland State University, the school also landed the #[COLLEGE_QUALITY_RANK_ALL_LEVELS] spot in our “[COLLEGE_QUALITY_NAME_ALL_LEVELS]” ranking.Of the 23,640 students enrolled at Portland State University, 1,127 were GI Bill® students, according to our most recent data. Out of that number, 739 were Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients. The average Post-9/11 GI Bill® award for tuition and fees at the school was $8,835. In addition to receiving other benefits, 100 students qualified for the Yellow Ribbon Program. Eligible students may be able to receive credit for their military training.
The low undergrad student loan default rate of [DEFAULT_RATE_STRING]% is a good sign that students have an easier time paying off their loans than they might at other schools. For comparison, the national default rate is 10.1%.

You’ll be in good company if you decide to attend Oregon State University. It ranked #2 on our 2023 Most Veteran Friendly in Oregon for Physics list. This large school is located in Corvallis, Oregon, and it awarded 48 ’s physics degrees in 2020-2021.
Oregon State did well in our major quality rankings, too. It placed #[COLLEGE_QUALITY_RANK_ALL_LEVELS] on our “[COLLEGE_QUALITY_NAME_ALL_LEVELS]” list.Of the 32,312 students enrolled at Oregon State University, 1,559 were GI Bill® students, according to our most recent data. Out of that number, 1,000 were Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients. The average Post-9/11 GI Bill® award for tuition and fees at the school was $8,385. On top of their other funding sources, 17 students received scholarships through the Yellow Ribbon Program. Eligible students may be able to receive credit for their military training.
The school has an excellent freshman retention rate of 85%, which means students like the school well enough to return for a second year. The low undergrad student loan default rate of [DEFAULT_RATE_STRING]% is a good sign that students have an easier time paying off their loans than they might at other schools. Out of the 4 schools in the Most Veteran Friendly in Oregon for Physics that were part of this year’s ranking, University of Oregon landed the #3 spot on the list. University of Oregon is a large school located in Eugene, Oregon that handed out 65 ’s physics degrees in 2020-2021.
UO not only placed well in this ranking. It is also #[COLLEGE_QUALITY_RANK_ALL_LEVELS] on our “[COLLEGE_QUALITY_NAME_ALL_LEVELS]” list.Among the 21,752 students enrolled at University of Oregon, 582 are GI Bill® students, according to our most recent data. Out of that number, 314 were Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients. The average tuition and fees award for the Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients was $11,688. To help with additional expenses, 25 students qualified for the Yellow Ribbon Program. Students may be able to receive credit for their military training, depending on their background.
The undergrad student loan default rate at the school is [DEFAULT_RATE_STRING]%, which is quite low when compared to the national default rate of 10.1%.

You’ll be in good company if you decide to attend Willamette University. It ranked #4 on our 2023 Most Veteran Friendly in Oregon for Physics list. Willamette is located in Salem, Oregon and, has a small student population. In 2020-2021, this school awarded 11 ’s physics degrees to qualified students.
As a testament to the quality of education offered at Willamette, the school also landed the #[COLLEGE_QUALITY_RANK_ALL_LEVELS] spot in our “[COLLEGE_QUALITY_NAME_ALL_LEVELS]” ranking.Our most recent data shows that 38 of the 1,866 students enrolled at Willamette University were GI Bill® students, of which 21 were Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients. The average tuition and fees award for the Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients was $22,172. On top of their other funding sources, 15 students qualified for the Yellow Ribbon Program.
Since the school has a undergrad student-to-faculty ratio of 10 to 1, those pursuing a degree will have more opportunities to interact with their professors.
