When pursuing a degree in today’s world, students have many different options to choose from. Our “Best Value Agriculture Schools” ranking is one tool we have developed to help in this regard.
In 2020-2021, 3,370 people earned their degree in agriculture, making the major the 202nd most popular in the United States.
For this year’s “Best Value Agriculture Schools” ranking, we looked at 63 colleges that offer a degree in agriculture. The schools that top this list are recognized because they have great agriculture programs and cost less that schools of similar quality.
When determining these rankings, we looked at things such as overall quality of the agriculture program at the school and the cost to attend the school once aid has been awarded. Check out our ranking methodology for more information.

Top 25 Best Value Colleges for Agriculture
Out of the 63 schools in the Best Value Agriculture Schools that were part of this year’s ranking, South Dakota State University landed the #1 spot on the list. South Dakota State is a public institution located in Brookings, South Dakota. The school has a fairly large population, and it awarded 75 ’s degrees in 2020-2021.
South Dakota State did well in our major quality rankings, too. It placed #5 on our “Best Agriculture Schools” list. The estimated yearly cost for South Dakota State is $18,578 for Agriculture students.

You’ll join some of the best and brightest minds around if you attend University of Nebraska - Lincoln. The school came in at #3 for the Best Value Agriculture Schools. UNL is located in Lincoln, Nebraska and, has a large student population. In 2020-2021, this school awarded 36 ’s agriculture degrees to qualified students.
UNL also took the #4 spot in our “Best Agriculture Schools” ranking. The yearly cost to attend UNL is $17,013 for agriculture students.
The low undergrad student loan default rate of 2.2% is a good sign that students have an easier time paying off their loans than they might at other schools. For comparison, the national default rate is 10.1%. With a freshman retention rate of 85%, the school does an excellent job of retaining its undergraduate students.

Purdue University - Main Campus came in at #18 in this year’s edition of the Best Value Agriculture Schools ranking. West Lafayette, Indiana is the setting for this large institution of higher learning. The public school handed out ’s agriculture degrees to 32 students in 2020-2021.
Purdue not only placed well in this ranking. It is also #7 on our “Best Agriculture Schools” list. It costs about $13,377 for Agriculture students per year to attend Purdue.
With a freshman retention rate of 93%, the school does an excellent job of retaining its undergraduate students. The undergrad student loan default rate at the school is 1.7%, which is quite low when compared to the national default rate of 10.1%.
