For this year’s “Best Value Visual Arts Schools in the Southeast Region” ranking, we looked at 15 colleges that offer a degree in visual and performing arts. The schools that top this list are recognized because they have great visual and performing arts programs and cost less that schools of similar quality.
Some of the factors we look at when determining these rankings are overall quality of the visual and performing arts program at the school and the cost of the school after aid is awarded among other things. Check out our ranking methodology for more information.

Out of the 15 schools in the Best Value Visual Arts Schools in the Southeast Region that were part of this year’s ranking, Northern Virginia Community College landed the #1 spot on the list. Northern Virginia Community College is located in Annandale, Virginia and, has a large student population. In 2020-2021, this school awarded 24 ’s visual arts degrees to qualified students.

Located in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, this fairly large public school awarded 22 diplomas to qualified ’s visual arts students in 2020-2021.
As a testament to the quality of education offered at Southern Miss, the school also landed the #9 spot in our “Best Visual & Performing Arts Schools in the Southeast Region” ranking. Regent University is a fairly large private not-for-profit school situated in Virginia Beach, Virginia. It awarded 4 ’s visual arts degrees in 2020-2021.

Christopher Newport University came in at #6 in this year’s edition of the Best Value Visual Arts Schools in the Southeast Region ranking. CNU is a public institution located in Newport News, Virginia. The school has a small population, and it awarded 46 ’s degrees in 2020-2021.
CNU also took the #4 spot in our “Best Visual & Performing Arts Schools in the Southeast Region” ranking. The yearly cost to attend Christopher Newport University is $25,855 for southeast region visual arts students.
The school has an impressive undergrad student loan default rate. It’s only 0.9%, which is much lower than the national rate of 10.1%. The school has an excellent freshman retention rate of 87%, which means students like the school well enough to return for a second year.

Mississippi University for Women did quite well in the 2023 Best Value Visual Arts Schools in the Southeast Region ranking, coming in at #7. MUW is located in Columbus, Mississippi and, has a small student population. In 2020-2021, this school awarded 4 ’s visual arts degrees to qualified students.
MUW did well in our major quality rankings, too. It placed #15 on our “Best Visual & Performing Arts Schools in the Southeast Region” list. The estimated yearly cost for Mississippi University for Women is $12,761 for southeast region visual arts students.

With a ranking of #8, University of Mary Washington did quite well on the 2023 Best Value Visual Arts Schools in the Southeast Region list. Located in Fredericksburg, Virginia, this small public school awarded 17 degrees to qualified ’s visual arts students in 2020-2021.
UMW also took the #5 spot in our “Best Visual & Performing Arts Schools in the Southeast Region” ranking. The yearly cost to attend University of Mary Washington is $23,193 for Southeast Region Visual Arts students.
The school has an impressive undergrad student loan default rate. It’s only 2.7%, which is much lower than the national rate of 10.1%.

George Mason University did quite well in the 2023 Best Value Visual Arts Schools in the Southeast Region ranking, coming in at #10. This large school is located in Fairfax, Virginia, and it awarded 107 ’s visual arts degrees in 2020-2021.
In addition to being on our southeast region visual arts students list, GMU has also earned the #2 rank in our “Best Visual & Performing Arts Schools in the Southeast Region” ranking. The yearly cost to attend GMU is $19,551 for Southeast Region Visual Arts students.

Duke University came in at #15 in this year’s edition of the Best Value Visual Arts Schools in the Southeast Region ranking. Durham, North Carolina is the setting for this fairly large institution of higher learning. The private not-for-profit school handed out ’s visual arts degrees to 6 students in 2020-2021.
As a testament to the quality of education offered at Duke, the school also landed the #1 spot in our “Best Visual & Performing Arts Schools in the Southeast Region” ranking. The estimated yearly cost for Duke University is $32,459 for southeast region visual arts students.
Since the school has a undergrad student-to-faculty ratio of 6 to 1, those pursuing a degree will have more opportunities to interact with their professors. The low undergrad student loan default rate of 0.3% is a good sign that students have an easier time paying off their loans than they might at other schools. For comparison, the national default rate is 10.1%. The school has an excellent freshman retention rate of 97%, which means students like the school well enough to return for a second year.
