With 198,468 degrees handed out in 2020-2021, engineering is the 7th most popular major in the United States. In 2019-2020, engineering graduates who were awarded their degree in 2017-2019, earned an average of $68,653 and had an average of $23,855 in loans still to pay off.

Across the Great Lakes region, there were 32,891 engineering graduates with average earnings and debt of $69,005 and $24,728 respectively. At the bachelor’s degree level specifically, there were 21,759 engineering graduates with average earnings and debt of $40,343 and $26,790 respectively.

This year’s “Most Veteran Friendly in the Great Lakes Region for Engineering for a Bachelor’s” ranking looked at 62 colleges that offer degrees in a bachelor’s in engineering. Not only do the schools that top this list have excellent engineering programs, but they also offer a lot of support to veterans and active service members.

Ohio University - Athens Campus landed the #24 spot on the 2023 Most Veteran Friendly in the Great Lakes Region for Engineering for a Bachelor’s ranking. Athens, Ohio is the setting for this large institution of higher learning. The public school handed out bachelors’s engineering degrees to 273 students in 2020-2021.

Our most recent data shows that 726 of the 25,714 students enrolled at Ohio University - Athens Campus were GI Bill® students, of which 324 were Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients. The average Post-9/11 GI Bill® award for tuition and fees at the school was $6,725. In addition to receiving other benefits, 10 students qualified for the Yellow Ribbon Program. Kettering University landed the #25 spot on the 2023 Most Veteran Friendly in the Great Lakes Region for Engineering for a Bachelor’s ranking. Kettering is a small private not-for-profit school situated in Flint, Michigan. It awarded 365 bachelors’s engineering degrees in 2020-2021.

In addition to being on our great lakes region bachelor’s degree vets studying engineering list, Kettering has also earned the #14 rank in our “Best Engineering Bachelor’s Degree Schools in the Great Lakes Region” ranking.Of the 2,030 students enrolled at Kettering University, 54 were GI Bill® students, according to our most recent data. Out of that number, 39 were Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients. The average tuition and fees award for the Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients was $17,554. To help with additional expenses, 11 students qualified for the Yellow Ribbon Program. Students may be able to receive credit for their military training, depending on their background.
